Fishin Hell – Retrospective

Fishin hell – Retrospective

The idea for this game was spawn from Zelda – Links awakening. Probably the second best zelda game I’ve played and I’ve always enjoyed the fishing aspect of Zelda, theres something about taking a break from the action to do a bit of fishing. So I set out simply to re-create the fishing game from ZLA, mainly because I wanted a break from the headache I was having with Emerald Beach.

To achieve the look of a dot matrix screen I had to find software to draw in pixels. I’ve never done pixel drawing before so I did a bit of Googling. My only requirements after ease of use was portability, I work on the go, even when Im on the shitter i’m normally doing something for my games so it was important to get an app that would work on either my iphone/ipad or laptop. I discovered “sprite something” the best £4 I’ve spent.

Using some sprites as guidelines I started to draw out the fish and before I knew it, I had my first “dot matrix”fish… WHOOP!

I dropped it into my game and quickly had it animated. After a few days coding and tweaking I had the basics of my game looking and to some degree playing out like the Zelda game. The thing was, it was boring.

Fishing in Zelda worked because you had something else to do, so I started thinking about what that something else could be in my game. It was then I started thinking about a second part to the game and I came up with this idea of hell. Why…? I’m not really sure.

I started designing a night time scene and then made my hell fish. I then came up with the rule that any missed fish become hell fish, so you’ll have to deal with them at some point. It’s like a penalty for not catching the fish.

Around this time I decided I wanted to add colour and move away from the gameboy look and feel, so I went back and coloured my pixels while at the same time designed them all to be the same size.
I then spent the next few days/weeks on deving up the rest of the game ready for the release deadline 31st July.
This was a bit of a rush, because of other commitments I didn’t get as much done as I would have liked but I got enough to be happy to release it, so I did:-)
It was then a case of sitting back and waiting for the reviews, this is always a funny part.
So I was told my game is “un-realistic” (which made me laugh, what part of fish being sucked into hell and coming back raged is realistic?)  The other hand I was told my game was “simple and fun”, so this is what you have to deal with, polar opposite comments, more-so with “Fishin Hell” it seems its a game people either love or hate, which is great!
I’ve made a hell of a lot of changes since the first release taking on the reasonable comments and feedback, I’m now happy with it ;-)
My next step is to test it properly on the IPhone, then start adding new features!
