Portable Power

I got it from a boot fair a few years back, it’s a mega drive console with 6 embedded games, unfortunately the embedded games are crap (apart from sonic 2 and coloumns) anyway I was looking at it and thought I’d do a quick Google on it and see if its worth anything. Unsurprisingly it’s not worth anything, but what was interesting is Ben Heck had taken one apart and made a fully functional Mega Drive out of one by removing the embedded chip and soldering on a cart port.
For a few seconds I was thinking of embedding it into my console, but then thought better of it. What it does have though is a battery box and 3 AA batteries, maybe enough to power a screen?

Well, there’s only one way to find out, rip it open!
I cut a power cord up from an old phone and jammed the two ends into the battery port.
On the circuit board I tried a few combinations of “solder rubbing” that is running the “powered” cables over the solder points by the AC in to see if anything would happen. Would you believe it?! It only bloody lit up the screen!

This is great, the only issue now is I can’t solder it into place and this is why, look at the state of it, not only is it ruined, it’s massive!

I can’t risk messing up the circuit board so for now until I get some more money the project is hold, I need to get that soldering iron before moving on. I may, just for now try and glue gun it into place….
Tiny update
Getting a moving camera working was harder than it should have been. I spent a few hours on it, and most of it was wondering why everything stopped drawing. (Everything stopped drawing because I never set the projection matrix, because in my cleverness I made the projection matrix only ever get set in an impossible scenario).
Good news: I have a camera that will be reasonably easy to pair with an avatar/player character of some sort (right now it follows around a spaceship I modeled today – completely unrelated to the overall game)
Bad news: I didn’t get the weapons moving with the camera like I’d hoped I would.
More bad news: No video for today
Goal for tomorrow: Create a formal “player” class that holds one of the weapons I have modeled. Maybe make a basic shield model and texture it.
Something slightly different
So my 45 a day is slightly different at the moment, it’s still around game development but with the inclusion of a games console!
With my new Pi I’ve been struggling to think what to do with it, not that I’ve no idea, more that I have too many ideas. However last night I decided, I’m going to make myself a console to play my games on, oh and some emulated games, oh and a multimedia center! Because it’s my console I can decide what I want it to do, so here is my wish list:
- Must play my flash/html 5 games
- Must allow wired and non wired controllers
- Must be portable
- Must have a screen
- Must run any emulators through the RCA jack (for best old school results)
- Must play sound through speakers
- Must output through HDMI (if required)
- Must be able to change the SD card with ease
- Must handle multimedia
Sounds like a lot and maybe it is, I’ve never done anything like this before but I figured fuck it, i’ll give it a go.
So last night I searched the house for some kind of housing unit, which is when I stumbled across my little girls portable DVD player. Luckily it’s a two part DVD player, it came with two screens for the car.

I figured I would have a look in the second screen to see what’s inside, turns out not alot! So I instantly dropped my PI in there and checked I could close it all up and surprise surprise it was fine!

Oh and it it has an RCA jack, so all I need to do is cut open a VGA cable split it and solder it onto the jack right? Yup, before soldering I tested it and to my surprise it worked! I know there’s no reason why it shouldn’t but this is all new to me so little things that work first time make me smile!
BTW I haven’t soldered anything for years, the last time was when I was at uni and I soldered a little digital clock set from Maplins, I blew it when I switched it on because my solder was all over the show. So needless to say I was surprised to see my soldering skills had slightly improved, maybe it was the beer in the other hand that help

Anyway, I plugged everything in and checked it was running and happy days, it was.
I then went ahead with no real thought or planning about putting some entry holes into the case so that I could plug and remove both the SD and power port. There was no planning and I soon realised after “drilling” my holes I didn’t actually need the power hole, I’ll explain why later.
Why drilling in quotations? Well I actually used a Dremel with a wet stone sanding head and used the edge of the wet stone to pierce the plastic before “smoothing” off the edges, I should have been wearing a mask because now all the plastic particles are in my nose and throat, but you live and learn.
I mounted the PI inside and gave it all another quick proud test before heading off to bed. I’m actually generally surprised how well it’s looking, to be fair I’ve seen worse.

So now the plan is to get the following battery housing case and batteries. Im going to take the housing case apart and stretch the switch to the top of my housing then use a USB to power a hub, the hub will power the PI and any other peripherals attached, I’m also hoping to wire the screen into this somehow. I’ve no idea if this will work but there’s only one way to find out, worse I’ll do is blow the screen but we will see.

Took a LOT more than 45 minutes, but today I figured out how to make a UV map and unwrap and all that. Not efficiently/effectively, but I have the basic know-how and can improve on that if/when I ever need real texture work done.
It’s looking pretty acceptable for programmer art!
Tomorrow’s goals: Make the player control the camera, and if I can, hook the weapon to it so it moves around with the player’s camera (like a first person shooter).

So, I found this website on TIGSource a few months ago, and said, “Hey, I should do this.”
And then I never did it…
Until now!
Today, in almost exactly 45 minutes I:
-Finally made a semi-usable model in Blender
-Finally learned how to import a model into an XNA game
-Made a project in XNA with a model and the ability to rotate/move the object for closer inspection
Voila! 45 minutes!

Keeping this update really short because ’Back to the future’ is on TV
Been spending a bit of time on my controls, trying to tighten them up I still feel they need a bit more work but they are getting there, getting better!
I’ve started to introduce the story and I’m currently working on introducing a little spirit guy that will feed you the story as you play through the game.
The story itself is coming on well.
Ive also been playing around tidying up some of the assets and collision detection, again it’s getting better but still more work is needed.

This is really fun and introduces more puzzel solving solutions, currently it can be switched on and off, but I may change this so that it is time based running down once it’s turned on to add a bit of pressure.
I’m also toying with the idea of having baddies that you can kill in a variety of ways, I want to encourage experimentation and exploration, part of me is thinking I should extend the levels making them much larger but then again I like being restricted to the little area as it means I can focus more on the puzzels and not just “filling space”
I’m trying to think of another “power” that can be used to mix things up, I want to avoid “bullet time” as it’s done to death but I want something along those lines. Anyway here is a little video of my progress! (I’m aware of the big old collision detection bug at the end of it

My New Game
So here it is, the game I’ve been tinkering with for the last few days. It’s not a new concept of mine, I did something like this a few months back and now decided I want to take it a bit further.
I’ve spent some time trying to come up with a goal and that goal at the moment is to get the key to the gate as quickly as you can collecting gems along the way!
I’m not sure if it will stay like this, I’m still tinkering. You’ll notice in the game that you can create rift’s in time and space (portals) that allow you to travel to tagged areas; also later in the video I start flipping gravity. These tools will become collectable along the way making achieving higher scores much easier.
Anyway, I’m not tying anything down at this stage. Oh, and yes the graphics are heavily inspired by Fez
